I try to walk by, but I feel as if I'm being sucked into a homedecorating vortex as my mind thinks how much greater my armoire would look with a designer influence in the room. I eventually cave in and buy an Oldham fauxfur throw with purple stars. Hey, I said I was trying to be an adult; I never said I am one. After leaving the black hole of home accessories, I refocus on what I set out to do: create a cute armoire that reflects grownup taste. Sure, I could go to Home Depot, buy some primer (Kilz for around $12) and a bucket of Oops! paint (around $6 for a color that didn't work for another customer but can be yours at a discounted price). I admit, there's a bit of a wannabeMartha Stewart in me. I am more than able to slap on a couple of coats of paint. I think about painting a fullon mural to decorate the front of my find. For those of you who haven't tapped into your innerartist, you can have one of your favorite pictures be it your photograph of the Grand Canyon, your dog Mitzi or Munsch's "The Scream" made into a slide. Next, rent a slide projector from Photomark Inc. on McDowell Road for around $18 a day or, for the slower artiste, $27 per weekend. Projecting the image onto the new armoire, you can trace around the major outlines that make up the image with a pencil, later filling it in with colors, in the style you want. Well, mission accomplished. A beautiful, frugal, yet grownup piece of furniture rather than my childhood dresser from 1976 now stores a menagerie of electric equipment. And who knows, maybe I'll use some of my leftover paint to jazz up that 26yearold dresser and bed. |
