What is it like to live in Palo Alto

Stanford has a lot of graduate and professional students (around 8800) who live in town and a lot of Stanford alums live and work in Palo Alto. A fair fraction of all of the interesting activities occur on campus (public lectures, museums, etc).
There are a lot of tech and startups in Palo Alto, thus Palo Alto really isn a typical suburban city where people drive out of in the morning to their job and drive back into in the evening. People commute to Palo Alto and if you live in Palo Alto, you probably work there (or very nearby). There are a lot of restaurants and cafes in town that cater businesses.
There is a lot of money around. This is a mixture of old money and new money. It makes the area really expensive more expensive than SF. You see a lot of expensive oriental carpet shops, high end furniture, art galleries of questionable taste that capitalize on this clientele. Stanford junior faculty salaries are on the low end of the scale, similar to starting salaries in the startup realm.
In addition to the business districts, there is also the Stanford Mall which is on land owned by the university. This is an upscale mall which is anchored by Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Macys and has Tiffanys, Cartier, Louis Vuitton as some of their top end stores.
Palo Alto has been built up for awhile with the main part of Palo Alto being built preWW2 and the southern part being built in the postWW2 era.
